Graduate Student Positions

To Apply, please email your resume/CV to Dr. Nate Jones (cnjones7@ua.edu).  In the subject line, include your last name and “UA GRAD APPLICATION.”  In the email itself, please describe why you want to join the Ecohydrology Lab.

Our group’s goal is to improve the physical, chemical, and biological function of our water resources through a combination of fundamental and applied research.  We are part of the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alabama, and we collaborate with researchers from across engineering, the natural sciences, and the social sciences.

Students will gain both broad exposure to interdisciplinary water science while also developing a strong discipline-specific skillset. This includes the opportunity to participate in coursework and interact with faculty from across campus (e.g., Civil and Environmental Engineering, Geography, and Geology). Further, the candidates will also co-develop their thesis/dissertation topics with Dr. Nate Jones (Lab PI). While individual research questions will vary depending on each individual’s goals/interests, students will be encouraged to develop actionable projects that incorporate a combination of field work, lab experiments, and physically based modeling.

Potential research questions could include (but are not limited to!):
  1. How does stream restoration impact downstream hydrology and water quality?
  2. How do patterns of floodplain inundation impact downstream water quality?
  3. Do inidviduals in rural areas have equitable access to drinking water?
The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about participating in interdisciplinary research, have previous field work experience, and have coursework in hydrology and ecology. We are also looking for students that have some exposure to scripting languages (e.g., R, Python, and/or Matlab), geospatial analysis (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, and/or Whitebox GAT), and hydrologic modeling (e.g., HydroGeoSphere, MIKE-SHE, and/or MODFLOW).
