Open Graduate Position -- Flood impacts on private drinking water well

The ‘Bama Ecohydrology Lab seeks a MS or PhD student to focus on flooding and drinking water resources! The broader research team is focused on developing actionable tools (including an online dashboard!) that can be used by both private well owners and governmental agencies to plan for flooding events. Our team has expertise in hydrology, remote sensing, and public health engineering, and this initial pilot project will focus on North Carolina.

The successful candidate will work closely with the project team to (i) develop geospatial data layer of private well locations, and (ii) integrate national water model flood predictions into a decision-support tool. Through this work, the candidate will also be expected to develop hypothesis driven research based on their interests. Potential research topics could include developing machine learning algorithms to predict location of private wells, working with social scientists to develop environmental justice indicies, and/or workign with community partners to identify solutions to drinking water resource challenges.

The ideal candidate will have BS and MS degrees in a relevant field (i.e., environmental science, environmental engineering, or closely related field.) The candidate should be excited about working on an interdisciplinary team; interacting with community partners, and conducting both basic and applied research. Further, experience with scripting languages (e.g., R, Python, or Matlab), geographic information systems (e.g., QGIS, GRASS, or ArcGIS), and hydraulic modeling (e.g., HEC-RAS2D, MIKE FLOOD, Delft3D-FM) are preferred but not required.
